Tongue-Tied

Note:  If you suspect any issues health wise with your baby or babies, check with your physician right away.

Sometimes an infant will have trouble latching on to breastfeed and the problem might because he or she is tongue-tied.  It is a simple test to find out if that is an issue for your little one.

Make sure that the nail on your little finger is short so you will not scratch the baby. Gently put your little finger into his mouth beginning either right or left side (your choice may be influenced by whether you are right or left handed).  Gently sweep your little finger under baby’s tongue to the opposite side of his mouth.  If you cannot make the sweep easily, baby may be tongue-tied.  Check with your doctor to confirm and the doctor will decide how to best handle the situation.
